Are our dreams random? Is our brain just processing what is on our minds?
The reality is that God speaks to us in dreams.

We can indeed have soul dreams, influenced by what went on in our day, what we watched on TV, or things we ate before bed.
It is also clear from the Bible that God speaks to us in our dreams. So how do we know when we have a dream from God?

Have you had a dream that you felt must have had a deeper meaning than just what you saw in the dream?

When God speaks to us in dreams, the first thing to note is that most are symbolic and rarely literal, although they can be
Another sign to look for is how you felt when you woke up. Was it a good feeling or not? Generally, when God speaks to us in dreams we are not likely to wake up feeling stressed.

Have you noticed how you feel can depend on the dream you had before waking up?

Because the dreams are symbolic, the dream’s content will often not mean what you have thought it meant. You might be sitting or driving a brand new car in the dream. Does it mean you are getting a brand new car? Unlikely. Cars are often a symbol of ministry or your life journey, as would any vehicle. So the dream could mean that you will enter into a new ministry. If you are in the driving seat or driving, you could be leading a ministry. The colour of the car would also be symbolic. A yellow car could represent a hopeful journey, and a green car could mean a growth journey. Where you have passengers (or not, their details would also be potentially relevant. For example, if they are people you know, then a question to ask is, “What do they represent to me?” Again they are often symbolic. An unknown person in your dream usually represents the Holy Spirit, so having an unknown person sitting next to you in the car could signify that God will be supporting you through the Holy Spirit in the new ministry.

Who is the dream for?

When God speaks to us in dreams, one of the most crucial questions when interpreting is who is the dream for? We can often assume that it is our dream and, therefore, about us. However, the best way to answer this question is, “If I were not in the dream, would the dream still work: would there be the same outcome?” If you answer yes to that question, the dream is most likely for someone else. A dream for someone else might be for prayer and might be for sharing. Otherwise, the dream is most likely for you.

Another thing to look out for are numbers in dreams. Two often speaks about multiplication (or division), three usually refers to the Holy Trinity. Seven can relate to completion or divine fulfilment. The cool thing about numbers and many other symbols is that by looking in the Bible, we can find what they mean. The Bible also has some great examples of dreams and interpretations.
